Portland : Tibetans protest China's brutal shooting of Tibetan refugees
Around 100 Tibetans including many children gathered at Pioneer Courthouse Square Saturday to protest the shooting of unarmed Tibetan refugees by the Chinese army. After a brief introduction of the recent tragedy, chants of "CHINA,STOP THE KILLINGS" rang through downtown Portland. The crowd was outraged that Chinese army shot dead a 17 year old nun and a 13 year old boy and possibly five others just for fleeing the brutal oppression under Chinese occupation.Chinese spin doctors were at work right away when the news broke even though their Foreign ministry denied the reports few hours earlier. They later said the army fired for self defence not knowing a video few hours later would once again prove them wrong. Even the best spin doctors can't suppress the fact that a group of refugees with barely enough winter clothing on them to survive the harsh cold weather and hardly any food for days could fight against the well fed and well equipped Chinese army.At this protest, flyers describing the horrific shooting was handed to the public and also collected signatures on petition addressed to Asst Secretary Barry Lowenkron, United States Department of State requesting to strongly condemn this atrocity and help secure the release of the detained Tibetans mostly children. The protest ended with prayers for those who lost their lives and renewed determination that we will continue to voice our strong opposition to such atrocities and continue to fight for Tibet's Independence with which only these atrocities could be stopped forever.Thank you RTYC San Francisco for sharing the protest materials and visit www.tibetanyouthcongress.com for more details and pictures.Organized by Regional Tibetan Youth Congress, Portland/Vancouver.
