Mass arrests by Shenyang police under banner of Olympic security
Young author Sun Fuquan from Shenyang province was arrested on the eve of the Olympic Games by local police for allegedly inciting to subvert state power. He was illegally detained for twenty eight days and released only after his family paid five thousand Yuan. Sun suffered oppression after he published a song assessing the nineteen eighty nine pro-democracy rallies and also assisted retired servicemen to protect their rights. He says Shenyang police were motivated by large bonus before the Olympics to instigate mass arrest innocent citizens under the banner of Olympic security. Sun says dissidents and Falun Gong practitioners were particularly targeted, and jails and watch houses are overflowing with detainees.
Sun says that police were given a two hundred Yuan bonus for each person they arrested and that bonus has increased to five hundred Yuan. He says people dare not to speak about politics loudly as this would invite police to come inspect their work and make their managers very nervous. He says no one dared to hire him.
Sun says he and a number of his friends felt very sorry for retired-servicemen who were mostly unemployed and had no proper living entitlements. He says they try to help these ex-servicemen obtain their rights but were interfered with by police who also dug up articles he had previously published on line and charged him with inciting to subvert state power.
