Italian media marks passage of Laogai resolution
The passage of the resolution by a vote of 413 to one last Friday was welcomed by the Italian media. Several articles were published on December 18.
These articles describe the ugly truth behind China's growing economic power: the Laogai, public executions and the harvesting of organs for profit. The recommendations of the Laogai resolution were explained to Italian readers, and it is hoped that the EU will follow the U.S. example in its condemnation of the Laogai. There has been growing interest among the Italian public and media in the work of Harry Wu and the Laogai Research Foundation, as a result of Mr. Wu's successful trip in Europe in November. During his trip, Mr. Wu received the international "Giuseppe Sciacca" award, whose top prize was awarded to His Holiness the Pope, at the Vatican. He presided at a conference in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, gave a press conference in the Italian Parliament and participated in a number of conferences in Rome, Naples, Massa Carrara, Bologna and Milan. Mr. Wu's trip was covered intensely by the Italian media, with over 30 articles appearing in print and both RAI and Mediaset TV broadcasting various interviews and programs.
