Dalai Lama greeted on 75th birthday

Tibetans and supporters of their freedom struggle across the free world marked the Dalai Lama’s 75th birthday Jul 6 with prayers, cultural festivals and other forms of public gatherings that were marked by both gaiety and solemnity. In Dharamsala, continuous rainfall failed to deter Tibetans, tourists and members of the local host community from filling up the Tsuglakhang courtyard where the exile Tibetan government’s official function was held. The Dalai Lama attended the function, joined by the Karmapa and other guests that included a group of Chinese supporters from Australia and the Kangra District Commissioner.

The Dalai Lama made a brief statement, in which he thanked the well wishers but expressed sadness at the situation in Tibet. He thanked the Tibetans in Tibet for keeping their faith and determination while being denied the freedom to express their regard and wishes to him openly.

Prayers and celebrations were held in all Tibetan communities in exile as well as by Tibet supporters across the world, including with statements calling for the resolution of the Tibet issue.

Tibetan cultural events continue throughout the week including the World Tibet Day in Cologno Monzese (Italy).
