China : Strike hard campaign to target social conflicts
To deal with escalating social conflicts, China announced on Jun 13 the launch of a “massive” seven-month “strike hard” campaign, reported China’s official China Daily newspaper Jun 15.It said police nationwide were also told to watch high-risk places such as suburbs, and to nip violence in the bud by being more vigilant to social conflicts and helping resolve problems.The report quoted Zhang Xinfeng, vice-minister of public security, a telling a national meeting on the day, "China, during a process of social and economic transformation, is facing emerging social conflicts and new problems in social security."
The report said this is the fourth such round of yanda in China since 1983. During the campaign judicial authorities hand down swifter and harsher penalties. The previous rounds were launched in 1983, 1996 and 2001.
The report did not say, however, that in occupied Tibet, Yanda remains a yearly event launched ahead of the Tibetan National Uprising Day of Mar 10. And during the PRC-wide launch of the campaign, the authorities in Tibet and other Chinese occupied regions of Xinjiang and Mongolia target political activists
