Tibet : 5,000 Tibetans attend Rikyo’s funeral

Rikyo, the mother of three, who set herself ablaze yesterday in Zamthang, eastern Tibet was given a grand funeral ceremony by local Tibetans at around 11 pm (local time) later that day.Although, the area near the Jonang Zamthang Gonchen monastery, the place of the funeral, was under heavy Chinese security surveillance, thousands of Tibetans gathered to pay their last respects.Local Tibetans had to carry out Rikyo’s cremation in haste as the Chinese authorities had threatened to take the body into their custody.

Tibet : Mother self-immolates in Dzamthang

Today a Tibetan woman set fire to herself and died in the small town of Dzamthang, located in Ngaba Prefecture. A mother of three, Rikyo is believed to have been 33 years old.Rikyo’s self-immolation is the fourth to have occurred in the town of Dzamthang, and takes the total number of such protests throughout Tibet to 38. Rikyo was a neighbour of the three young men who had self- immolated earlier this year in February and April.

Tibetans in Lhasa mostly stayed indoors amid a security crackdown following the weekend self-immolation of two young Tibetan men in protest against Chinese rule.Checkpoints manned by Chinese security forces have been set up at key points near the popular Jokhang temple located on Barkhor Square, the site of Sunday's self-immolations, and Tibetans passing through them are thoroughly screened.The restrictions are intense.

Tibet : Twin self-immolation protest in Lhasa

Ngawang Woebar, the former president of the political prisoners’ group Gu-Chu-Sum told that his sources inside Tibet are reporting of a twin self-immolation protest in Lhasa earlier today.“My sources are telling me that two Tibetan youngsters today set themselves on fire in front of the Jokhang temple,” Woebar said.“Although, those with whom I spoke, haven’t witnessed the protest but they are confirming that the self-immolations did occur.”
Woebar added that following the protest, the entire city has been flooded with Chinese security personnel.

Tibet : Official Chinese Notification Bans Tibetan Participation in Religious Activities

Phul Chong, a famous Tibetan singer, recently fled his home following news of the Chinese Government's pursuit to arrest him.The Chinese Governemnet alleges that, through his song, he broke national unity and then wanted to arrest him.When Phul Chong got wind of his arrest, he took to his heels and is now in hiding.Phul Chong is born in Amchok village in the Marthang district of Amdo.He comes from a nomad family and is educated at the middle school level. Tibet : Tibetan Comedian Sentenced

Chinese authorities have sentenced a popular Tibetan comedian to prison on a weapons charge following a confession extracted under torture.Athar, 33, was taken into custody in early February by a special police team and had not been heard from since.Then, on April 29, a court in Lithang county sentenced him to three years in prison. The news of his sentence has been relayed to his family.The popular performer had been detained ahead of his plan to release a video criticizing Chinese rule in Tibet.

Tibet : A Tibetan orphanage school closed by chinese authorities

China just closed down the 'Gangjong Sherig Shedhe Woekar Ling' orphanage school this month and arrested two of its teachers.This school counted almost 50 students orphans and semi-orphans from the nearby regions.
The reason was school's strict adherence to teaching Tibetan language and culture instead of following the chinese school programs.Last month, one same event happened in Karzde region of eastern Tibet. Chineses shutdown a two-decade old Tibetan school 'Khadrok Jamtse Rokten School' and arrested two of its most senior teachers.

Tibet : Father Succumbs to Shock over Son’s Arrest in Shigatse

A Tibetan man died of emotional shock after security officers arbitrarily arrested his son at Tretroh village in Dopay Township in Ngamring County of Shigatse (Chinese: Xigaze) Prefecture in Tibet Autonomous Region.
According to information received by TCHRD, Tsetan Tashi, in his 60s, died of shock after security officers arrested his 30-year-old son, Tsewang Norbu, who was a monk at Ngamring Riwoche Monastery in Ngamring County.The Ngamring County Public Security Bureau (PSB) officers arrested Tsewang Norbu for writing Tibetan independence slogans, according to sources.

Dalai Lama fears Chinese poison plot

The Dalai Lama has revealed he fears Chinese agents have trained bogus female devotees to kill him with poison while seeking blessings.The Tibetan Buddhist leader told the Sunday Telegraph that he had been passed reports from inside Tibet warning of the plot, using Tibetan women.The 76-year-old Nobel laureate said he now lives in a high security cordon in his temple palace grounds in Dharamsala on the advice of Indian security officials."We received some sort of information from Tibet," he said.

Tibet : Fearing torture a tibetan stabs self to death

After being man hunted by Chinese security personnel for months, a Tibetan youth who had participated in an anti-China protest in Drango stabbed himself to death on March 29.Gonpo Rigzin, 25, had taken part in the January 23 mass protests in Drango and was apparently caught on Chinese police CCTV surveillance cameras.
Gonpo Rigzin had told his family members, while being hunted down, that he would rather kill himself than get arrested and tortured by the Chinese police.China continues to tighten the noose on Tibetans who had taken part in the peaceful protests in the region.



Police Checks Set Up Across Tibet

Chinese authorities are setting up police surveillance stations and other checkpoints across Tibet to monitor the activities of ordinary citizens and travelers approaching the capital city, Lhasa, in the latest move to tighten security in the region.The security measures come following protests against Chinese rule, including a wave of self-immolations highlighting the plight of Tibetans.Religious pilgrims going to Lhasa and others who are found without proper identification are stopped on the road and sent back to their places of origin.

An internal notice sent to all the prisons and detention centers of the Tibet Autonomous Region in March 2012, has barred all prisoners from meeting their friends and family.The notice has also clearly outlined a need for stricter vigilance in the prisons and has directed all the prison officials to closely monitor the movements of the Tibetan prisoners.Lawyers and legal advisers of the prisoners were asked to get the permission only from the chief warden and were allowed only a limited amount of time for case discussion.

Chinese authorities forcibly take over land from Tibetan nomadic villages

Chinese authorities have forcibly grabbed land from five Tibetan nomadic villages expected to be given to tens of thousands of new Chinese migrants.The new wave of migration would also result in the growth of a Chinese town fueled by construction of two hydro electricity projects.Tthe Tibetan residents of Setong, Dragmar, Seru, Machu and Goekar villages were forced to give up 60 per cent of their land and get rid of 54 percent of their animals within this year.The officials said animals will not be allowed to loiter on the land taken over by the government.

Tibet : Four Tibetans Killed, Four Monks Disappeared

Four Tibetans were killed during and in the aftermath of a protest in Kham region, eastern Tibet, in January and four monks were arrested and disappeared after the protest.During a peaceful demonstration in Drakgo County Town on January 23, Norpa Yenten and the unnamed son of Logyal were killed by Chinese police.The Chinese military then descended on Drakgo on January 24 and instructed all local people to return to their places of abode.They subsequently arrested many of the participants, accusing them of having produced leaflets that were displayed and distributed during the demonstration.

Tibet : Protests in Kardze

Chinese authorities have expelled over 30 young monks from Draggo monastery and have ordered that no monks below the age of 14 be allowed to remain and a monastery school that once housed 140 students and was earlier ordered closed was re-opened on April 25 with only 40 students attending.The authorities also launched a re-education campaign in the area, but Tibetans clearly demonstrated their resentment by smashing police vehicles. On suspicion of involvement, Sonam Rinchen, the son of Loden Sherab, and Troma were detained.
