Chinese Authorities Sentence Tibetans in Eastern Tibet

On April 26, the Chinese authorities sentenced 16 Tibetans who took part in protests in Drakgo County, Karze District, in January this year.The sentences of 13 of the Tibetans are known: Wangchen Tsering (30) received nine years; Choenam (25), three years; Sonam Lundhup (30), life sentence; Aze Shopo (50), three years; Gebe (around 30), 12 years; Kuntho (around 20), 13 years; Kundhup (around 30), eleven years; Nyindak (around 30), one year and eight months; Phurpa Tsering (around 30), two years; Wangtse (20), one year and nine months.

Tibet : Chinese Authorities Arrest Four Monks in Ba County

Today is the 23rd birthday of the 11th Panchen Lama Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, one of the most important spiritual leaders of Tibet, who disappeared into the custody of the Chinese government 17 years ago.On 14 May 1995, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama announced the then six-year-old Gedhun Choekyi Nyima as the incarnation of the 10th Panchen Lama.Three days later, on 17 May 1995, the Chinese government secretly abducted the six-year-old boy and his parents who remain ‘disappeared’ to this day.

A well-known Tibetan singer named Lolo has been detained by the Chinese authorities in Yulshul county, eastern Tibet , in April 19, 2012 after he released an album titled "Raise Tibet Flags,".He dedicated the album to the Tibetans' struggle, called on Tibetans to keep the continuity of their sovereign tribes, loyalty to Tibet, struggle for independence.The 29 year-old singer, who belongs to Dhomdha town in Yulshul county, eastern Tibet has been detained by Chinese authorities a few months after releasing his album that contained 14 songs.His present condition and whereabouts are not known.

Police detained a Tibetan businessman this week after he resisted the takeover of his land by county authorities, sparking a protest in which the man’s wife and another local Tibetan were also detained.Sonam Gonpo, 48, was taken into custody on April 10 when he appealed to Kardze county authorities to stop building on a piece of land they had earlier marked for construction.Chinese authorities tried to take over the land, but more than a hundred local Tibetans, along with family members and relatives, gathered at the site and lay down in front of the bulldozers and land-leveling machines.

Tibet : Prominent Local Tibetans Detained

Chinese authorities have detained three locally well known Tibetans from a county in Nagchu following protests over Chinese interference in Tibetan monastic affairs in the county.Authorities detained a traditional doctor, a businessman, and a teacher from Driru county in Nagchu in late February.The detentions follow a protest against Chinese rule sparked by monks from Pekar Monastery and involving hundreds of local Tibetans in the county earlier that month.The three, all of whom have been linked to traditional Tibetan medicine, remain unaccounted for and are believed to be still in custody.

Chinese authorities have shot dead a Tibetan man in Achok after he fought back when they came to detain him.In the scuffle, he injured two police and he was shot and died at the spot.The man, identified only as Tabuk, around 30 years old, was killed on April 5 by local Chinese police in Achok township in Labrang county.His death provoked a protest in his home village, Sekok, in Achok township, where Tibetans had planned to march to county offices in protest against the shooting.At that time some well respected lamas intervened and advised they withdraw the plan to protest.

A report coming out of Tibet say Phurbu Namgyal, a 20-year-old youth from Lhundup district near Tibet’s capital Lhasa, saw reflection of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the moon recently.He confided his experience to his friends while working together at a club house in Lhasa. He told them that if someone gazes at the night sky one can see His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the moon. All of them then started looking at the sky to see the vision outside the club.

A learned Tibetan monk who is also a high-ranking official at Drango Monastery has been arrested by police officers.Geshe Tenzin Pelsang of Drango Monastery was arrested on 2 April 2012 from his monastery in Drango County.Geshe Pelsang was arrested on suspicion that he acted as ringleader of the protests that rocked Drango on 23 January 2012.It is not known where he is detained and in what condition.Before his arrest, Geshe Pelsang was the chanzoe or the administrative staff at Drango Monastery.
