Beginning October 2011, the 'work teams' instituted by the Chinese authorities have launched campaigns such as 'Nine Must-Haves' and 'Harmonious Model Monastery' in Tibet.Monks and nuns are arrested for not complying with the restrictive activities organized by the work teams.This heightened religious repression has forced many monks and nuns to flee into nearby mountains and forests leading to the closure of monasteries in Tibet.

Tibet : Tibetan succumbs to injuries as he uses explosives to blast a government building

A Tibetan bombed a newly completed government building that was used to gather intelligence on the local community, sources said Tuesday.The man, identified as Tashi, aged 32, died in the explosion, succumbing to head injuries, in the incident in Rekpa village in Dege county on Saturday.He died in the explosion that also damaged the building.The government building was newly constructed to allow station officials to watch over residents of Rekpa and Wapa villages, angering the residents.

Tibet : Anti-China protest in Kardze

Tibetans in Kardze County staged anti-China protest while boycotting the celebration of the Tibetan New Year last week.Tibetans in Nyikhog area in Kardze County carried out protest demanding freedom for Tibet from China’s rule and distributed leaflets.The protest is timed during the Tibetan New Year last Friday and reportedly lasted until about the fifth day of the New Year, known as Losar in Tibetan.Chinese officials burned fire-crackers on the first day of the Losar in a bid to downplay the prevailing tense situation in Tibet and to paint a festive mood but was reportedly opposed by Tibetans

Tibet : Many Tibetans arrested in Chengdu

A Tibetan businessman from Nangchen was arrested in the Chengdu airport on Losar Febuary 22nd. He flew from Xining to Chengdu after participating in a mass protest in Nangchen on Wednesday February 8th, 2012.
Tamdin's arrest was in connection to his participation in the protests. Tamdin is a prominent Yartsa Gompo salesman and is said to have a strong standing in Nangchen.There is no information about where he is being held.Many Tibetans are being arrested trying to get to Chengdu and the Chengdu police are working with Xining police to arrest Tibetans residing in both cities.

Tibet : Self-immolation on the fifth day of Losar

On the fifth day of the Tibetan new year, February 26, a young Tibetan reportedly torched himself to death.
According to a report published by Tibet Times, this latest self-immolation protest occurred in the town of Ling Tsang Rinchenling in the Derge region of eastern Tibet.Citing an exile source, the newspaper reported on its website that the Tibetan set himself on fire in front of a newly built Chinese office in the town.The youngster passed away immediately according to the source.

Tibetans are disappearing;everyone is terrified about the bloodshed which seems inevitable.Lhasa consists of approximately 1.2 million Chinese and approximately 200,000 Tibetans.The majority of these Tibetans live in an area which is now almost entirely enclosed by military compounds with walls between 10-16 feet; some with barbed wire. This isolation gives the impression of what the Warsaw Ghetto was like. Inside the “enclosed” area groups of armed soldiers, S.W.A.T. teams, and police patrol the streets 24 hours a day. Tibet : Tibetan Writer Detained

A popular Tibetan writer has been detained by Chinese authorities.A team of 20 police officers went to the residence of Gangkye Drubpa Kyab, 33, in Serthar just before midnight on Feb. 15 and took him away.The police team was led by the head of the Serthar police station and the local secret service chief.His present condition and place of detention is unknown.Serthar was among three counties where Tibetans protested in late January and in which at least six were killed and 60 injured, some critically.

China on Thursday arrested three monks from a Tibetan monastery in the Tridu region of eastern Tibet.The three monks (Sonam Gyewa, Lobsang Samten, and Lobsang Nyima,from the Zilkar monastery) were arrested in connection with recent mass protests that occurred in the region.Thousands of Tibetans in Tridu area had led a protest, carrying banners demanding the release of Tibetan political prisoners and respect for Tibetan lives.Around 400 monks from the Zilkar monastery had led the protest march to Dza Toe town, which later swelled to over a thousand.

Tibet : Monk self immolated in Ngaba

Today around 2:30 pm Tibet time, 19 year old monk Lobsang Gyatso of Kirti Monatery in Ngaba, self immolated to protest the continuing illegal occupation of Tibet by Communist China.He was beaten while in flames by the Chinese police and is currently under police custody. It is not known whether he is alive or not at this time.The 19-year-old is the second teenager to set themselves on fire in Ngaba in the last three days following Tenzin Choeden who died on Saturday.

Chinese security personnel hunted down and killed two Tibetans who suffered bullet wounds in the January 23 protests in Drango.The two have been identified as Yeshi Rigsel, 40 and Yeshi Samdup, 38.Yeshi Rigsel had suffered bullet injuries to his arm on January 23 in Drango when Chinese security personnel opened fire on unarmed Tibetans.At least five Tibetans are dead and over 30 seriously injured in the police firings.The two brothers, Yeshi Rigsel and Yeshi Samdup had fled Drango town after the protests and were hiding in the mountains.The police had been on the look out for all the protester

In a protest in Nangchen on Wednesday, as many as 1,000 people, mostly laypersons in traditional dress, flocked to the county stadium under close watch by security forces. They chanted prayers and shouted slogans such as "Freedom for Tibet" and "Long live the Dalai Lama,". When armed soldiers and policemen closed in, the Tibetans shouted "Kyi Hi Hi," a Tibetan battle cry in defiance.The soldiers and policemen then retreated but watched from a distance.

In Tridu county, about 400 monks from the Sekha monastery launched a 12 kilometer "solidarity" march to Dzatoe town but were stopped by security forces halfway at a bridge, angering about 1,000 local residents who then joined the demonstration."Chinese pressured the monks to stop the march, and at that point around 1,000 local residents joined the protests and raised slogans for up to three hours," one local source said.Another source said the monks had defied appeals by laypersons against proceeding with the march amid fears they would be detained.
