Tibet : 6 monks of Ngaba Kirti monastery arrested

Chinese authorities in Tibet’s Ngaba County have on Thursday arrested 5 Tibetan monks of Kirti monastery where Chinese work team officials have been stationed since April 12 to carry out “Patriotic Reeducation Campaign,” said Kanyag Tsering, a monk at the exile based Kirti monastery.Lobsang Kunchok, 28, and four other monks of Ngaba Kirti monastery were arrested on Thursday and their current whereabouts are not known.Another monk of Kirti monastery, Tsering Damdul has been arrested a few days earlier for his alleged role in bringing Phuntsok’s body to the monastery on March 16, 2011.

Tibet : 80 Tibetans arrested in Ngaba

On April 27, a group of 80 Tibetans from the neighboring Golog prefecture went to Ngaba in about 40 vehicles to show support for relatives enrolled as monks in the monastery, a Tibetan living in Ngaba said, speaking on condition of anonymity.“When they had traveled as far as the Gyatoe subdistrict in Upper Ngaba, Chinese security forces detained them,” he said.“Many of those Tibetans come from Chigdril [in Chinese, Jiuzhi] county, and are worried about their relatives at Kirti monastery. They have received no information about their present condition,” he said.

In Derge, three young Tibetan men went into hiding after putting up posters and leaflets calling for independence.The three men—Tsering Kyipo, 25, Jampa Ngodrup, 33, and Lobsang Thubten, 30—fled after their protest actions on March 6 in Derge's Dzakhog town.Police moved quickly to detain Tsering Kyipo’s father Sangpa, aged about 53, Lobsang Thubten’s mother Choetso, aged about 64, and Jampa Ngodrup’s brother Mochag, aged about 47.The detained relatives were also fined 20,000 yuan each and told they would remain in custody until the young men are captured or surrender to authorities.

Tibet : Protest against rampant mining by the Chinese government, Tibetans imprisoned

The toxic effluent produced by rampant mining of a gold reserve near a sacred mountain in Rebkong in northeastern Tibet continues to pollute a river flowing out of it.The waste generated from the gold mining activities are being openly dumped on the pastures with least concerns. The effluents are discharged directly into the Gu- Chu river harming both the people and animals alike.The local residents have repeatedly filed numerous grievances and complains against the gold miners, to the local authority offices to the central government, but all in vain.

Jampa Tso, a nun from Badak Phuntsok Choeling Nunnery, Drangko County, Kardze “Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture”, has been arrested after she shouted slogans calling for freedom in Tibet and distributed leaflets on 16 April 2011.According to confirmed information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD), Jampa Tso staged her demonstration at a bridge leading to the market place in Derge County. Soon the police came to know about it and immediately arrested her.

Reports have emerged of several arrests including a monk named Lobsang Dhargye, 31, of Kirti monastery on April 11, 2011.Several people were arrested on Friday but details could not be confirmed yet.The Chinese authorities on Wednesday said no monk would be allowed to leave the monastery premises until Chinese government’s Work Team officials finished their job, added the source. “They (Chinese officials) told the monks that whether the Work Team would finish off their job soon would depend on how the monks complied to the patriotic reeducation,” the source said.

In Gansu, a siege was under way at a middle school where students demonstrated in November in support of continued Tibetan-language classes.Gonpo, a researcher at Dharamsala's Norbulingka Institute, said that security had been stepped up outside a Tibetan high school in Machu township in the remote western province of Gansu."I heard the armed police were still outside [the school] in Machu," Gonpo said."The school was closed for a few days. When they came back to class, the students were confined in the courtyard of the school and prevented from leaving [campus]."
