China : Officials Demolish Church Building

Heilongjiang — On June 12, 2010, a building belonging to Yichun’s registered Three-Self Patriotic Movement church was demolished and removed by force, despite the objection of members.Yichun authorities wanted to requisition the land of the church, but they did not wait to reach any agreement with the church before taking action and proceeding with the demolition. The director of Yichun District personally took over the command of the operation, bringing a formidable force of police officers, armed policemen, and riot policemen.

UAW : Solidarity with Chinese autoworkers

The one million active and retired members of the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace & Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) stand in solidarity with Chinese autoworkers who in recent weeks have escalated their struggle for higher wages, safer working conditions, and the establishment of independent trade unions. Beijing : Sit-in outside department of Communist Party

Authorities in Beijing have dispersed a group of protesters who gathered near a railway station in the southern part of the capital.The protest came after an attempt to stage a silent sit-in outside the complaints department of China's ruling Communist Party was thwarted by police.The petitioners, who have come to Beijing from across China in a bid to draw attention to alleged abuses in their hometowns, regrouped in the southern district of Fengtai, where many of their number live in rough, shanty-town accommodations.

China : Over 2,000 students clash with police

This Centre has learned that more than 2,000 middle school students of Paoche Middle School in Pizhou City, Jiangsu Province surrounded and attacked the city government building on the evening of 21 June because they were upset about the city government's decision to relocate the school. Some people were injured when students clashed with several hundred riot police personnel, but the number of injured or dead is unknown. The students did not disperse until the secretary of the city's Party committee, Feng Qipu, promised that Paoche Middle School would not be relocated after all.

Tibet : Tibetan Activist on Trial

A prominent Tibetan businessman-turned-activist has gone on trial in China's troubled northwestern region of Xinjiang, on theft-related criminal charges that were initially dropped in 1998, his relatives said.Tibetan environmentalist and art collector Karma Samdrup went on trial Tuesday at a court in Yanqi county, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), on charges related to a grave robbery, regional sources said.Dolkar Tso, Karma Sandrup's wife, said in an interview that her husband's trial lasted from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, with a short lunch break.

An award-winning Tibetan environmentalist's trial on separatism charges has been put on hold, the latest twist in a trio of intertwined cases pitting three brothers against China's communist authorities.The cases come amid increasing reports of repression of Tibetan intellectuals, an echo of the massive security crackdown that followed deadly rioting in the capital Lhasa two years ago.Rinchen Samdrup was due to go on trial Thursday in the Tibetan region of Chamdo on the charge of "incitement to split the country," but the trial was abruptly canceled on Sunday, according to lawyer Pu Zhiqiang.

Tibet : Tibetans Held After Protest

Chinese authorities detained some 30 Tibetans in a remote area of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) after they attacked security vehicles brought in to quell protests over a mine, according to local sources.The standoff occurred around May 21 in the U Yuk Sog Chen subdistrict of Namling [in Chinese, Nanmulin Xiang] in Shigatse [Rikaze] prefecture, the sources said.

East Turkestan : Chinese Regime Campaign Suppresses Uyghur Identity

Last month, the Chinese Communist regime initiated a series of political movements in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region under the title of “Protecting social stability and unity between the ethnic groups.”These campaigns include: burning the Uyghur’s’ traditional women’s clothing and Muslim religious books, closing study places for the Koran and detaining or economically punishing those who participate in or organize any groups to study the Koran.Even having a long beard became a reason for economic punishment.

Southern Mongolia : Catholic Church Demolished

The only Catholic church in Ordos, a city in Southern Mongolia,was demolished on June 7. The priest Gao En and lay leader Yang Yizhi were arrested by police.At about midnight 100 people arrived at Dongsheng the church , belonging to the Catholic community, and destroyed it. Fr. Gao En and Yang Yizhi, awakened by the noise, tried to prevent the demolition but were handcuffed and taken away.The church, belongs to a community of about 1,000 Catholics, a small part of the estimated 200,000 throughout Inner Mongolia, was duly registered since May 2009.

China : Automotive strikes spread

Workers at a second Toyota plant in Tianjin went on strike on Thursday 17 June, causing production to be suspended. Talks between workers and management at Toyota Gosei Co. over wage demands continued Friday, a management spokesman said.A brief strike at Toyota’s steering wheel manufacturer in Tianjin earlier on 15 June ended when management agreed to consider workers’ demands for higher pay.However, several workers at Tianjin Star Light Rubber and Plastic have expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of negotiations and are threatening to strike again if their demands are not met.

Tibet : Jokhang protester tortured in prison

Samdup Gyatso, the 28-year-old man who was arrested after he staged a lone protest in front of the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa on May 1 has been found jailed at the city’s Drapchi prison by his younger brother.
The brother, Tenpa Dhargyal, located Samdup at the prison, meant for sentenced detainees, on Jun 13. He has said his brother had been tortured in prison and was in poor health on account of it. It was not stated, however, whether he had been tried and if so what his prison term was.

Tibet : Tensions Rise in Quake Town

Hundreds of Tibetan residents have been protesting since Monday over attempts by the local government to remove them from their land.They gathered outside government offices in Yushu's Gyegu township with banners after the government made public reconstruction plans in which people would be relocated."The important thing is that in the quake-hit area, a lot of the local people bought land here on which to build their houses," a monk from a local monastery, Tsering Gyatso, said.

UK terminates development aid to China

China : Underground Pastor Held

An underground Christian pastor has been detained in the central China city of Zhengzhou, the church leader said from an interview in custody.Pastor Zhang Mingxuan, president of the Association of Chinese Family Churches, was detained with his wife Sunday as the couple traveled by car to Yancheng city in the southeastern province of Jiangsu.Police stopped the pastor and his wife on the road, taking them to a hotel in Henan province capital Zhengzhou, where Zhang is based.

Tibet : Life-jailed lama in poor health

Tenzin Delek Rinpoche, a prominent local lama and activist of Lithang County in Sichuan province, originally sentenced to death in Dec’02 , suffers from ailments related to bones, heart, and blood pressure, reported Radio Free Asia , citing a written statement from a source in Tibet. The report followed a meeting his two sisters were finally allowed by 5he authorities on Apr 27.The meeting, which Sonam Dekyi and Dolkar had been petitioning for for a long time, took place at an unspecified place arranged by the authorities some 200 miles (320 kms) from the provincial capital, Chengdu.

Tibet : 3 Tibetan monks arrested in Thangpu

China has arrested three monks of Wara Monastery in Thangpu Township, Jomda County (Ch: Jiangda xian) in Chamdo Prefecture, “Tibet Autonomous Region” (‘TAR’) on June 7, 2010.The County Public Security Bureau, after review of cases of protests in 2008 and 2009, have summoned the monks to the County PSB headquarters for questioning. The monks, according to a source, were suspected of leading and instigating protests in Jomda County in 2008 and 2009. Kelsang Dhargayp; 32, Tashi lhundup; 22, and Tashi wangdue; 35 were arrested on June 7 after questioning them at the PSB headquarters.

China : Workers are demanding the right to form their own labor union

Striking workers at a Honda auto parts plant here are demanding the right to form their own labor union, something officially forbidden in China, and held a protest march Friday morning.Meanwhile, other scattered strikes have begun to ripple into Chinese provinces previously untouched by the labor unrest.A near doubling of wages is the primary goal of the approximately 1,700 Honda workers on strike here in this southeastern China city, at the third Honda auto parts factory to face a work stoppage in the last two weeks.

China : Fifty striking Chinese workers hurt in clashes

Some 50 workers striking at a factory in eastern China were injured, five seriously, after clashing with security forces earlier this week.A strike halted production by carmaker Honda for the third day running on Wednesday.Recent clashes and walkouts throughout China have called attention to the poor working conditions in many factories.About 2,000 assembly line workers at the KOK Machinery factory in the city of Kunshan tried to take their protests onto the street on Monday and were prevented from exiting.

Tibet : Writers Brutally Beaten by Chinese Police

China : Two days, two strikes in the Pearl River Delta

Emboldened by the successful strike of their colleagues at Honda’s transmission plant last week, about 250 workers at the company’s exhaust plant in Foshan went out on strike Monday 7 June demanding higher wages and overtime payments.This followed an almost identical strike action at Taiwanese-owned Merry Electronics (美律电子有限公司) in Shenzhen’s Bao’an district, on Sunday morning. A few hundred workers blocked the factory entrance at around 8.am and the crowd eventually grew to more than one thousand, spilling out on to the main road in Dalang sub-district.

East Turkestan : Police Raid Quran Group

Authorities near the western Silk Road city of Kashgar have detained a group of ethnic Uyghur women who had formed a group to study the Quran, overseas groups said."More than 30 Uyghur women were raided in force by the Chinese police in recent days after they got together to study the Quran," said Dilxat Raxit, a spokesman for the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress."They detained all those present and confiscated more than 40 Qurans."Raxit said that the Chinese government said the women were engaging in illegal religious activities.
