Update on Dege Jodha County, Eastern Tibet protesters

On 10-13 March 2009, inhabitants of four villages in the Upper Lhopo region of Dege Jodha county in Eastern Tibet let their livestock eat their crops as a form of peaceful demonstration against the violence enacted by the Chinese government throughout Tibet since the 10 March 2008 protests.
A few neighboring villages also followed their example. Recently, the same four villages refused to accept tractors from the government, and some local young adults expressed their dissatisfaction with Chinese rule.

Uyghur Grandfather Detained

A man at the center of a story related to China’s tough one-child policy is in custody.
HONG KONG—Authorities in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) have detained an ethnic Uyghur man for speaking to foreign media after international attention helped his daughter avoid a forced abortion under China’s population control policy.

Tursunjan Hesen, 67, was detained July 2, according to Juret, chief in Nogaytu village, Dadamtu town, in Ghulja city.

“I don’t know why he was arrested or where he is. You can ask higher officials more about the case,” Juret said in an interview.

Shimla revisits independence of Tibet

Shimla, October 29 - At a time when India is visibly disturbed by China’s vehement territorial claim over Arunachal Pradesh a group of Tibetan scholars converged in the hills of Shimla from different parts of India to discuss independence of Tibet. Lukar Jam, an independent research scholar, called this meeting creating a unique platform called the ‘Young Intellectuals Forum’. Recalling the historical significance of Shimla as the place where the 1914 Shimla Agreement was signed he said “we have brought with our discussion a revisit of independence of Tibet to Shimla”.

Bingtuan School Expels Christian

A Chinese student runs into trouble when he refuses to renounce Christianity.
HONG KONG—A high-school student who refused to renounce Christianity has been expelled from a Han Chinese military production corps school in the remote northwestern region of Xinjiang, an overseas rights group said.

Second-year high-school student Chen Le said he was expelled by the Huashan Middle School in the 2nd Agricultural Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on Oct. 20, the U.S.-based China Aid group said in a statement.

Uyghur Scholar Alleges Massacre

Mr. Yusoph Shohret, a Uyghur scholar now resident in Australia, has disclosed details of an alleged massacre that happened in Urumqi in July.
An entire Uyghur community disappeared that night.
In an interview with The Epoch Times, Shohret introduced himself as a teacher who used to work at Xinjiang University in Urumqi, and now still has many relatives and friends in Urumqi.

According to Shohret, a massacre took place in complete darkness on the night of July 5. "The Horserace Track community disappeared. Many were killed, some fled."

India : 14 Tibetan students arrested for protesting Chinese FM's visit

The Karnataka police have arrested 14 Tibetan youths following separate incidents of protest in Bangalore earlier today as the foreign ministers of China, Russia and India met for the ninth RIC trilateral meeting.
Students from the Bangalore regional Tibetan Youth Congress were protesting the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jeichi. “The police had anticipated protests by Tibetans. Police teams had even arrived at the Tibetan Youth hostel at Kormangla a few days ago but the students had already dispersed into various parts of the city to participate in demonstration today.”

Hubei: La signora Zheng Yuling è deceduta sotto custodia

La signora Zheng Yuling è stata arrestata durante la notte del 6 agosto 2009 mentre esponeva uno striscione che denunciava la persecuzione nei confronti del Falun Gong nel quartiere residenziale del dipartimento di polizia di Chibi. SHANGHAI CHARTER ’08 SIGNER GETS ONE YEAR AND SIX MONTHS FOR “OBSTRUCTING OFFICIAL BUSINESS”

Human Rights in China (HRIC) learned that on October 23, 2009, Duan Chunfang , a Shanghai petitioner and Charter ’08 signer, was sentenced by a Shanghai court to one year and six months in prison for “obstructing official business.” Duan’s family members said that this is an unjust ruling and that they plan to appeal. Duan has been petitioning the authorities for redress for the 2007 death of her brother, Duan Huimin , while he was serving a Reeducation-Through-Labor (RTL) sentence.

Tibetan Youth Congress carry out 12 hour hunger strike

Dharamsala, Octiober 27 - The regional Tibetan Youth congress spearheaded a protest yesterday by holding a 12-hour hunger strike to condemn the executions of four Tibetans by China. The four Tibetans had been allegedly booked for taking part in last year’s protests in March.

Tibetans residing in Dharamsala are outraged over the execution. A candle light vigil was also observed in memory of the martyrs in the evening.

A monk said, “We are here today to show our solidarity for the people who are suffering in Tibet and especially those who are sentenced to death in Tibet”.

China : 10 More Arrested After Detainees Refuse to Leave Without Fellow Linfen Pastor

SHANXI--The skies were clear when Shan Yongchang, the Linfen-Fushan church member who was arrested for text-messaging about the 9/13 incident, was released on Friday, October 9. The next day, PSB officials offered to release ten Linfen-Fushan Church leaders from their detention, under the condition of holding Pastor Yang Rongli until further notice. Protesting her continued detention in an act of solidarity, the church leaders refused to leave without Pastor Yang. "We are one team in the one body of Christ! We won't leave her behind alone. We will not leave prison without her."

Tibetan Executions Reported

At least three Tibetans are said to have been executed in connection with an anti-Chinese uprising in 2008.
KATHMANDU—Tibetan exiles and residents of the region say Chinese authorities have executed at least three people convicted of rioting during last year's widespread uprising against Chinese rule.
These would be the first reported executions in connection with rioting that erupted in March 2008 in Lhasa. Capital punishment is administered only rarely in Tibet, experts say.

Exiled Tibetans' Vigil Condemns China’s Execution of Tibetan Prisoners

Exiled Tibetans, local Indians and foreign visitors held a candlelight vigil in Dharamsala, India, last night, in response to the Chinese government's execution of four Tibetan prisoners near Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, on Tuesday.
The vigil was organised by the Tibetan Youth Congress, the Tibetan Women's Association, Gu Chu Sum Movement of Tibet, the National Democratic Party of Tibet and Students for a Free Tibet, who issued a joint statement calling the executions "an affront to international judicial standards" which was "clearly politically motivated."

Four Held in Land Clashes

Violence erupts again over development of Chinese farmland.
HONG KONG—Authorities in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong have detained four villagers following clashes this week between police and local residents over a disputed sale of farmland which left six people in hospital.
Work on a planned economic development zone in Shuidong township near Guangdong’s Maoming city has halted following the standoff, which villagers said left three people seriously injured.

“The villagers broke through the perimeter wall of the construction site,” a local resident who attended the protest said.

During New York Visit, Chinese Forced Labor Camp Director Sued by Local Refugees for Torture

NEW YORK – The man in charge of forced labor camps in China's Guangdong province was served yesterday with a lawsuit while visiting Manhattan. The complaint, filed on behalf of two female refugees now residing in Queens and other victims still in China, urges that the camp system superintendent be held liable for torture, illegal deprivation of liberty, and other severe human rights violations carried out in Guangdong labor camps that he has overseen since 2000.

China’s Exports Decline Sharply

First three quarters show drop of over 20 percent
A report released by China's General Administration of Customs on Oct. 14, 2009 shows a sharp decline in exports.
The report shows that the total value of China’s imports and exports for the first three quarters of 2009 was down 20.9 percent to $US1.56 trillion when compared to the same period in 2008. The value of exports was down 21.3 percent to $US846.65 billion. The value of imports was also down 20.4 percent to $US711.17 billion. The overall balance of trade surplus was down 26 percent to $US135.48 billion.

China executes Tibetan protesters

Exile groups report the deaths of four Tibetans linked to last year's riots
Chinese authorities have carried out their first executions of Tibetans in connection with the deadly riots that swept Lhasa last year, according to exile groups.
As the first reported judicial killings in the region for six years, the news has prompted overseas protests and concerns that proper legal procedures were not followed.

China jobless pose 'grave' crisis

China's job outlook remains "very grave" and could deteriorate further, a senior official has said.
The government is under "enormous pressure" to create jobs, said Wang Yadong at the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.
Last month, the Chinese authorities predicted 8% growth for 2009, thanks to a four trillion yuan ($585bn; £390bn) economic stimulus plan.
But the global downturn has still put millions of Chinese out of work.

Taiwan warns of China 'threat'

Taiwan's defence ministry has said China's military strength is far more than it needs for self-defence and it is a threat to the Asia-Pacific region.
It warned unless 1,500 missiles aimed at Taiwan were removed, both nations would find it hard to trust each other.
Relations had been improving since the Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou, took office last year.
China, which regards Taiwan as part of its territory, has not yet responded to the Taiwanese defence report.

China opens a new front in Kashmir

BANGALORE - India and China appear to have opened a new front - Kashmir - in their ongoing war of words.
While India has warned China against involvement in projects in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, Beijing seems to be adopting a new, provocative line on Kashmir with regard to India.

For years, China kept up a careful balancing act between India and Pakistan on the divided Kashmir issue, even endorsing - on occasion - India's position. It is now depicting the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir as a sovereign entity.

Many 'missing' after China riots

Dozens of ethnic Uighurs have disappeared since being detained in the wake of the riots in China's Xinjiang region, a human rights group has said.
Human Rights Watch said the 43 men and teenaged boys were taken in police sweeps of Uighur districts of Urumqi, and had since vanished without a trace.
"The cases we documented are likely just the tip of the iceberg," said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch.
The rights group is calling for the Chinese government to give details of everyone it is holding in detention.

China projects Kashmir as a separate country

Kathmandu: Besides issuing separate visas to Indian passport holders from Jammu and Kashmir, China is also projecting the disputed territory as an independent country in other ways.
Visitors to Tibet, especially journalists invited by the Chinese government, are given handouts where Kashmir is indicated as a country separate from India.

Media kits providing 'basic information' about Tibet - which China attacked and annexed in the 1950s - says Tibet 'borders with India, Nepal, Myanmar and Kashmir area'.

Principal of Mongol-Tibetan Medical School Arrested in Mongolia by Chinese Police

Batzangaa, a Southern (Inner) Mongolian exile and the Principal of the Ordos Mongol-Tibetan Medical School, was arrested at the front entrance of the United Nations Refugee Agency office building in Ulaanbaatar, capital of the independent country of Mongolia on October 3, 2009 while seeking United Nations political refugee status. Four Chinese policemen sent from China accompanied by more than 10 Mongolian policemen carried out the arrest. Batzangaa’s wife Ms.Bayanhuaar and their 9-year old daughter were also arrested in Ulaanbaatar.

Eight Tibetans arrested for defying Chinese government orders

Dharamsala - Eight Tibetans have been arrested in Jomda County by Chinese authorities earlier this month, according to a Tibetan member of parliament with contacts in the region.
Monlam Tharchin, a Tibetan parliamentarian who is also a member of the parliament’s Standing Committee, said the eight Tibetans were arrested following arguments between local Tibetans and Chinese authorities who had questioned the Tibetans’ decision not to do any farming activities around this time.
