Tibet : Residents concerned about monk who smuggled information

Dharamsala, April 30 – Tibetans in Ngaba are concerned about a monk who allegedly sent information to the outside world about an incident that involved another monk who set himself ablaze on February 27, 2009, according to a press release issued by Kirti monastery here.Tibetans in Ngaba tried to locate Jamyang Phuntsok, 35, through various government offices but his whereabouts remain unknown. Some fear he might be dead already.The Chinese police arrested Jamyang Phuntsok, 35, from his room at Kirti monastery days after the incident of a Tibetan monk named Tabey setting himself ablaze.

China: Government Blocks Access to YouTube

The Chinese government has blocked YouTube, the video-sharing Web site run by Google. Beijing originally blocked YouTube in late March, then lifted the block for a brief period around March 27. At that time, residents of Beijing could use the site. But in recent weeks, the site has been inaccessible without going through proxy servers, according to people in several Chinese cities.

Jamyang Norbu :Non fermate la Rivoluzione!

C’è un incubo ricorrente, ben noto nella psichiatria clinica, in cui il dormiente picchia un nemico ma non riesce a procurargli alcun danno. Più furiosamente si colpisce il nemico, con pugni o calci, più egli rimane esasperatamente illeso. In tutti gli anni in cui ho lavorato a Dharamsala mi è sembrato di combattere sotto il peso di una frustrazione e di una impotenza senza rimedio, spesso anche inutilmente. Sono certo che altri tibetani in Tibet e in esilio hanno provato gli stessi sentimenti.

China detains three Tibetan monks in Nagchu County

According to confirmed information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD), the Chinese authorities in Nagchu County, Nagchu Prefecture, “Tibet Autonomous Region” (“TAR”) has secretly detained three Tibetan Buddhist monks.
On 11 April 2009, Nagchu Public Security Bureau (PSB) detained Khensur Thupten Thapkhey, 47, a former abbot of Shapten Monastery and a 34-year old scripture master, Geshe Tsultrim Gyaltsen, for unknown reasons.

Court sentences 4 Tibetan monks to 2 years in jail

Dharamsala, April 26 – China has sentenced 4 Tibetan monks of Lutsang monastery to two years’ imprisonment, according to Voice of Tibet radio service.
Citing a Tibetan monk named Khedup of Drepung monastery, the VOT said the Chinese authorities arrested 6 monks of Lutsang monastery around April 10, 2009.

However, Khedup said charges put against the four are not clear. He said the exact dates of the trial and court’s verdicts are not known.

Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the XI th Panchen Lama turns 20

Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the XIth Panchen Lama of Tibet, today turns 20. He has been missing for the past fourteen years since his abduction by the Chinese authorities at the young age of six. There has been no information about his well being and whereabouts and continue to remain under enforced disappearance since 17 May 1995.

Honoring Falun Gong’s April 25th Appeal, Ten Years On

On April 25, 1999 thousands of Falun Gong practitioners gathered quietly in Beijing to ask for the release of adherents who had been beaten and detained in a nearby city. More broadly, they sought to raise concerns with government leaders about ongoing harassment of Falun Gong at the hands of a few high-ranking officials.
The event captured headlines around the world, but more importantly to those who were there, it was a chance to explain to the Chinese leadership how Falun Gong had brought health and harmony to their lives, and that the attacks by some Chinese officials were unwarranted.

Concern that detained Tibetan magazine editor is being tortured

Reporters Without Borders is concerned about the physical safety of journalists and website editors who have been arrested in the past few months in Tibet and neighbouring Tibetan regions. The latest to be arrested is Dokru Tsuilrim, a monk who edited the magazine Khawai Tsesok (Soul of the Snow).

The press freedom organisation hails the release of Golok Jigme, a monk who helped filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen make the 2008 documentary “Leaving fear behind”. Dhondup Wangchen is still being held.

A 36-year old monk, Kelsang Gyatso, of the Labrang TashiKhyil Monastery has been arrested by the police on 13 April 2009. Kelsang was part of the group of monks who defiantly briefed a state managed media tour to the area on 9 April 2008.

Tibetan students protest in Labrang: Update

Dharamsala, April 24 – Students of a Tibetan school in Labrang, Sangchu County, left their school compound and marched into streets to protest the Chinese government early this morning.
Dolkar Kyap, head of the Norbulingka’s Academy of Tibetan culture, told Voice of Tibet radio service that the Tibetan students were expressing their disappointment over the rise in number of Chinese students in college level institutes.

Blind Chinese Activist's Wife Under House Arrest For Over Three Years

Ms. Yuan Weijing, the wife of blind Chinese rights activist Chen Guangchen, has been put under house arrest by the Chinese communist regime for the past three year and seven months. On April 19, she was beaten again by thugs hired by the local regime for going out to pick up her kids from her mother's home.

Fear of arrest and torture drives Tibetan monk to suicide

Dharamsala, April 21: For fear of arrest and torture by Chinese police, a Tibetan monk named Shedup is said to have committed suicide at a monastery in Amdo Rebgong, in Qinghai Province, earlier this month, a report on the official website of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile said Tuesday.The report said Shedup, aged around 40, committed suicide at a monastery in Rebgong (Ch: Tongren) in Malho Tibet Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai Province), around April 2.The name of the monastery where he committed suicide is still unknown, but it is believed to be Tarjang monastery located in Dowadhog.

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) expresses its shock and dismay over the harsh sentences passed on three Tibetans by the Lhasa Municipal Intermediate People’s Court.

Chinese court issues death sentence to another Tibetan

A Chinese court in Tibet has sentenced a Tibetan , identified as Penkyi ,to death with a two-year reprieve and two others to long jail terms , Chinese media said Tuesday.
According to the report, the other two Tibetans convicted, one of whom also was named Penkyi, of Nyinmo County, and the other Chimed, was sentenced to life imprisonment and Chimed was jailed for 10 years, the report said.

Oggi mi hanno confermato che il 1 Aprile la polizia politica ha arrestato l’abate , ed un numero imprecisato di monaci, del monastero di Denma Choekhor a Jomda nel distretto di Chamdo.
Tutti gli arrestati avevano preso parte alle manifestazioni del Gennaio scorso.
Lo stesso giorno la polizia ha anche arrestato due monaci che erano in ritiro in una vicina località.
Sempre il 1 Aprile la polizia ha fatto irruzione nel monastero di Tsetsang ,nel distretto di Kardze ,arrestando due religiosi e sequestrando materiale”separatista”.

Tibetan writer arrested for “Anti PRC” writings

Dharamsala – A Tibetan monk from Ngaba Gomang monastery was arrested in the beginning of this month for alleged anti government writings, according to Choedak, a Tibetan living in exile.
He was accused of writing two articles that criticized the Chinese government and supported the “separatist forces of the Dalai Lama”.

The Tibetan writer Dokru Tsuilrim was picked up by Chinese police from his room at Ngaba Gomang monastery.

Ho visto i bagliori d’allarme che hanno seguito l’annuncio dello Special Meeting di Novembre, uno dei quali, di cui ho parlato in un articolo precedente, è stato il rifiuto del primo Ministro Samdong Rimpoche di accogliere l’avviso generale che l’incontro potesse contribuire ad un ripensamento della nostra politica fallimentare verso la Cina.

Ieri sono riuscito a parlare con un contadino che ha partecipato agli scontri di Nyakrong e mi ha riferito dell’accaduto.
Ai primi di Aprile i commissari del partito comunista cinese avevano minacciato i contadini in sciopero di esproprio se non avessero ripreso il lavoro.
La gente non si è fatta intimidire ed in risposta alle minacce ha organizzato una grande manifestazione.
Centinaia di contadini hanno sfilato nel centro cittadino al grido di “Tibet Indipendente” e “Cinesi tornatevene a casa”

Dalai Lama nephew walks 900 miles to NYC for Tibet's Independence

The Dalai Lama's nephew has finished a 900-mile walk across America to protest what he calls Chinese suppression of Tibetans.
After the four-week trek from Indiana to New York, Jigme Norbu's feet were full of painful blisters and were missing nails and the feeling in one toe.
Capping his "Walk for Tibet," Norbu led a noon rally Saturday in front of the Chinese consulate on Manhattan's West Side.
