Falun Gong Artist Sentenced to Five Years in Prison

Zhou Ning, an artist who provided free art classes for disabled children, was put in prison for five years when authorities discovered that he practiced Falun Gong, a traditional Chinese cultivation method based on the principles of "truthfulness, compassion and forbearance." His wife was denied rights to visit him.

In 1997, Zhou Ning and his wife, Xiao Yixia, used their own savings to set up the Truth Art Studio in Jinan city to teach young deaf-mutes sculpture lessons free of charge.

Chinese Teachers Go On Strike

Over 5,000 teachers in Liaoning Province in northeast China have been on strike for days calling for salary increases and better benefits. While the authorities have not officially responded, school leaders are trying every means to put down the strike.
The strike in Changtu County, Tieling City is one of many large-scale teacher strikes that have broken out across China in 2008 to demand fair treatment. Teachers in Changtu complained that teachers’ salaries in their county are the lowest in the city, about 300 yuan (US$44.12) to 1,000 yuan ($146.63) lower than nearby counties each month.

Charter 08 : Wei Jingsheng

I want to talk about "Charter 08" that everyone was interested in.
Even while I was visiting in Europe, politicians in various countries including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, had already asked me about it. Many politicians have noticed the moderate tone of Charter 08, which was different from the goal of the Chinese opposition to end the dictatorship of the Chinese Communist Party. Some politicians even were questioning its background.

The decision taken at the "Special Meeting" called by the Dalai Lama himself in Dharamsala the capital of the exiled Tibetans situated in the North Indian state of Himachal Pradesh was a historic one though its nuanced importance is little understood outside.

Christmas Day Persecution in Anhui, Henan and Xinjiang; 13 Christians in Prison

CHINA – On Christmas day, Christians in Anhui, Henan and Xinjiang were persecuted for their faith by Chinese government officials. At the time of this press release, two leaders are imprisoned in Anhui province, seven Christian leaders are in prison in Xinjiang Autonomous Region and four Christian women leaders are in prison in Henan province.

ANHUI – On December 25, Christmas day, a house church in Bozhou city, Anhui province was also raided while celebrating Christmas. Two leaders were arrested and are still in prison at the time of this press release.

Il centro di detenzione è in realtà una fabbrica in cui si lavora in modo intensivo, con un grosso stabilimento. I prodotti sono per la maggiorparte articoli destinati all'esportazione, come ad esempio bambole. Ho notato che sulle scatole dei prodotti c’erano le scritte “USA”. La fabbrica inoltre lavora cuoio ricavato dalla pelle dei cani.

Christians in Earthquake Disaster Areas Raided by Police on Christmas Eve

SICHUAN, CHINA (ANS) – ChinaAid contacts issued the following report of police raids on four households in the Sichuan earthquake disaster area on Christmas Eve. The households were raided because of the help they received from Christians.

Reports from Tibet indicate that a number of those arrested after the mass demonstrations against the Chinese occupation of Tibet in March have been beaten to death in prison.
Armed police are currently everywhere in Tibet’s capital Lhasa.
The Chinese regime’s heavy handed response to the protests resulted in large numbers of Tibetans being shot, arrested or simply disappearing.
The news coverage of these events that state-run media broadcast in China amounted to propaganda aimed at turning popular opinion against Tibet and especially the Dalai Lama.

Media Ban on Charter '08 Activists

Signatories to Charter 08, a document which called recently for sweeping political change in China, will be barred from contributing articles to state-controlled media, a top official news executive says.
HONG KONG--China's powerful Central Propaganda Department has ordered a crackdown on Chinese media workers who signed a document this month calling for sweeping political reforms, a management executive at a state-run media organization said.

Christians Beaten and Registered Church in Jiangsu Province Demolished

JIANGSU, CHHINA (ANS) – Police, real estate developers, and government officials from Yancheng city, Jiangsu province, together with nearly a thousand unidentified people, forcibly demolished the Chengnan Christian Church of Tinghu District, on the morning of December 17, 2008.
ChinaAid says the destruction of this registered church came less than 24 hours after the church won a court case protecting their building against the same individuals who attacked it.

Il signor Zhao Guoji, 63 anni anni, viveva nella città di Bazhong, provincia di Sichuan. Il 17 marzo 2007 dei funzionari della Divisione per la Sicurezza Nazionale, lo hanno arrestato, portandolo nel centro di detenzione del distretto.

China, a Not-So-Free Country in a Free Market Economy

Chinese democracy advocate Wei Jingsheng stated that many of the current economic problems stem from China being a major contributor to the global free market. During Wei’s recent European tour, he said that China, a country without freedom participating in a free market is the cause for economic troubles in Western countries. President of Transitional Government issues orders to military

On December 22, President Wu Fan of the China Transitional Government issued a third decree to Mainland military and armed police forces, requesting the Chinese troops, armed police officers, soldiers and policemen to refuse to open fire to suppress commoners, when receiving superior orders or instructions. If the higher level officials order you personally to implement massacre, you have the right to shoot the superior officers.

China detains 59 over 'Tibet rumours'

China has detained 59 people accused of fabricating subversive rumours in Tibet. The term "rumours" is often a euphemism for anti-government views in China .
China has detained 59 people in Tibet for spreading rumours and trying to stir up racial hatred and incite violence, state media reports.
They are also accused of downloading "reactionary" songs from the internet for distribution within Tibet, the China News Service said.

The news report said they were acting under the influence of exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

Report confirms two arrests, five tortured to death in Tibet

Dharamsala, December 24: Two Tibetans, including an abbot of a monastery, were arrested by Chinese Public Security Bureau officials in Tibet last month, according to a report published by the Tibet’s Government-in-Exile on its official website on Monday.

According to the report, while an unnamed Tibetan youth was arrested in Lhasa on 20 November for raising slogan of Tibet’s independence, the reason for the arrest of Khenpo Jampa Gyaltsen, abbot of Woeser monastery in Markham County of Chamdo Prefecture in Tibet, from his monastery on 28 November remained unknown.

Petition Urges China to Free Dissident

BEIJING — More than 160 prominent writers, scholars and human rights advocates outside mainland China have signed an open letter to President Hu Jintao asking him to release a well-known intellectual and dissident who was detained this month. The letter was posted on the Internet on Tuesday.

Jiangsu Demolitions Spark Clashes

Clashes erupt in eastern China over property demolitions and forced evictions.
HONG KONG—Residents in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu said several people are still in hospital after two separate clashes with the authorities over disputed demolitions.
Residents of Xuefu Road East in Dongtai city said around a dozen people were injured in clashes after security personnel and officials came to demolish a road bridge.

Population control becomes money-spinner

China’s one child policy is now being used as a money-making tool by local Communist officials who impose excessive fines for those who breach the rules. They even force some ‘offenders’ into retirement, according to local residents.
Ms Wang says many Communist officials have more than one child themselves, but will still impose fines on the public if they breach the rules. She says these fines are not reported to senior officers, but are instead kept in the hip pockets of local officials.

Human rights campaigner Guo Quan officially arrested

On December 19th family members of Guo Quan, a human rights campaigner from Nanjing city, received notice of Guo’s arrest from the People’s Procuratorate Office. Guo’s mother and wife feel powerless as the authorities won’t allow Guo any legal representation, saying the case involves state secrets.

More Tibetans Being Jailed: Report

Dharamsala, Dec. 23 – China is handing down further prison terms to Tibetans arrested for protests earlier this year in southwestern province of Sichuan, according to sources, Radio Free Asia reported. Many of those recently sentenced are said to have taken part in a March 18 protest in Kardze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. “Recently, two monks, Orgyen Tashi and Tenzin Ngodrub, were sentenced by the Kardze People’s Intermediate Court to three years’ imprisonment,” the source told RFA.
